Cannabis Terminology

In the world of cannabis, there always seems to be new and different products and terminology. In order to help navigate the cannabis landscape, Seven Point Farms listed some common terms used to help better understand your medical cannabis ...

Cannabis Terms

Blunt - A hollowed-out cigar filled with cannabis that is oftentimes blended with tobacco.

Blunt wrap – Rolling paper made of tobacco which mimics the hollowed out cigar method of rolling blunts.

 

Bong AKA Waterpipe A handheld pipe (normally made of blown glass) with a water reservoir at the bottom that helps to cool the smoke and makes for a smooth hit.

Bowl – The part of the pipe or bong where you put the cannabis. Also a unit of measurement.

Bubbler – A mini bong.

Budder – The opaque form of hash oil. Budder is generally softer and more pliable than wax which is more crumbly.

Buds – The dried flowers of the cannabis plant.

Bubbler - A handheld pipe with a built-in percolator.

 

Budtender - The salesperson at a dispensary.

Butane Hash Oil (BHO) – A butane extraction method producing a concentrate that can be further processed into honey oil, honeycomb, butter, wax, crumble, or shatter. 

Butter - BHO that’s been heated, manipulated, and then cooled into a butter-like substance for dabbing.

Cannabinoids - Compounds in cannabis like THC and CBD that interact with your body’s cannabinoid receptors.

 

Carb - The hole in a pipe or bong that you cover when first inhaling and remove to clear the chamber.

 

Caviar  - A joint rolled with cannabis, a line of concentrate oil, and sometimes dipped in concentrate oil and rolled in kief.

 

CBD – The abbreviation for cannabidiol, a cannabinoid of cannabis.

Clear  - A decarboxylated, fractionally distilled, hard-jelly-like substance extracted without solvent and distilled into a colorless, odorless, and sap-like form. Flavored with terpenes it can be dabbed, smoked, vaped, or eaten. Also known as “clean.”

 

Concentrates  - Cannabis compounds that are extracted via heat, pressure, or solvents.

 

Cone - A joint with a built-in filter and rolled paper, filled with ground flower.

 

Crumble  - A form of BHO or PHO that is crumbly.

 

Cure - The process of drying flower that involves hanging, air drying, and then sealing flowers into jars for one to six weeks. Resulting in more potent, tighter buds.

 

Dab - One serving of concentrate, which can range in size. 

 

Dabber - A metal tool used to cut off a dab of concentrate. Also called a dab stick.

 

Dank - Good cannabis.

 

Decarboxylated - The heating process that activates THC, usually with a lighter, or in the oven for edibles.

 

Edibles -  are food items made with cannabis or infused with cannabis oils. Edibles may be an alternative to smoking or vaporizing cannabis. Edibles come in many forms, e.g. brownies, cookies, candies, including animal or fruit-shaped gummies, suckers and chocolates, and as beverages.

 

Extract - is another term for concentrate, a highly-potent substance derived from the cannabis plant that will get you seriously messed up if you smoke too much of it. Extracts are usually produced in a very scientific manner, and producing them should generally be left to the experts. Don't blow yourself up, please.

Flower - Cannabis in its basic form.

Grinder - An apparatus used to grind flower into smaller pieces. 

Honey oil - BHO that’s sticky and slightly runny.

Honeycomb - BHO that’s crumbly with lots of air pockets.

Joint - A rolled cannabis cigarette. 

Kief - The resin trichomes of cannabis that may accumulate in containers or be sifted from loose dry cannabis flower with a mesh screen or sieve.

Moon Rock - Dense flower rolled in BHO, dipped in kief, then smoked in a bowl.

Potency Profile - The breakdown of cannabinoids in a tested strain.

 

Pre-rolls - Filtered joints.

Propane Hash Oil (PHO) - Concentrate derived from a propane-based extraction is referred to as Propane Hash Oil, or PHO for short.

 

Rig - Similar to a water pipe or bong, but designed for dabs.

 

Rosin - A heat-pressed, solvent-less concentrate. 

 

Sap - BHO, that you dab, that looks similar to tree sap.

 

Shake - A combination of leaf trimmings and poorly formed buds. Best for vaping or baking.

 

Shatter - BHO in its hardest form.

 

Slab - A large portion of concentrate. It could be an entire cookie sheet or a large piece of concentrate scraped up with a dabber.
 
Terpene Profiles – Lab-produced reports showing smells of different cannabis.
 

Terpenes - Organic compounds present in resin that give cannabis and other plants their smell and taste. In addition to being responsible for the plant’s aromatics, terpenes can also act synergistically with cannabinoids, modifying the effects. Terpenes are often used in essential oils.

 

Vape Pens - A battery-powered device with interchangeable mouthpiece attachments and usually filled with CO2-extracted concentrate.

 

Wax - BHO that’s soft and crumbly, similar to wax.
